‘Electric Boogie’

Tania is a contemporary Māori artist, visual arts educator and passionate community advocate with over 20 years of experience nurturing creativity in young people. As the founder of ‘Kai Aroha - Feeding Our Hungry Community’, a community charity she established in 2015, her commitment to manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and supporting whānau extends beyond the classroom and into the wider community. Tania’s art practice explores whakapapa, mātauranga Māori and the relationship between traditional Māori visual language and contemporary abstraction. Working across painting, photography, sculpture, light and installation, she investigates how colour, form, material and light can communicate Māori identity, culture and creativity in new and unexpected ways. Currently completing her Master of Māori Visual Arts at Massey University, Tania continues to explore, question and push the boundaries of her own creative practice. ‘Electric Boogie’ embraces the fluorescent yellow as it moves across the surface of the tiki, like an electric current, bringing energy, movement and new life to this ancestral form. The media she uses challenges how we see, interpret and engage with Māori visual culture beyond customary art forms and practices . ‘Electric Boogie’ celebrates the continuing evolution of Māori art — grounded in whakapapa, yet unafraid to move beyond convention.
