BOARDING LIFE

At TIPENE, seven-day boarding is central to our unique character and holistic learning model.

Whitiora is home to our Year 9 and 10 tāne Māori, with a new kaingarua planned to accommodate Years 11–13 in the near future. Our boarding whānau are supported by dedicated kaiako and kaimahi, all of whom live on site at TIPENE. This ensures a seamless connection between daily school life and the wellbeing of our ākonga, allowing staff to deeply understand and support each student’s ako, hauora, and oranga wairua. A Lead Caregiver, affectionately known as ‘Whaea Tash’, resides in Whitiora to provide day-to-day health and wellbeing care for our tama.

Boarding life at TIPENE is vibrant and structured. The learning day begins at 6:30am and concludes at 9:00pm, with weekends devoted to kaupapa hākinakina, wānanga reo, tikanga, kapa haka, and whaikōrero, alongside academic learning programmes. All staff share responsibility for weekend duty, ensuring that the boys are surrounded by guidance, support, and opportunities for growth.

Our facilities are designed to support the wellbeing and performance of our ākonga. A whare horoi kākahu (laundry) operates daily, while the wharekai provides three nutritious meals and snacks each day, with a focus on fresh, seasonal kai to fuel excellence both in and out of the classroom. Meals are shared communally, with tikanga such as karakia and kai rituals reinforcing values of respect, gratitude, and whanaungatanga.

At TIPENE, Whitiora is far more than accommodation – it is tūrangawaewae, culture, and brotherhood. Here, tama Māori are nurtured to stand proud and strong, growing into future leaders for their whānau, hapū, and iwi.
