TAMATI BRUCE (Ngāpuhi, Ngai Tupango)
‘The Bigger Picture’
This artwork reflects my journey of reconnecting with te reo Māori and rebuilding my cultural identity. I chose the Māori Language Act 1987 and Te Ture mō Te Reo Māori 2016 because they relate to the loss of our language within my whānau over generations. Beginning my journey at Te Pā o TIPENE symbolises a new opportunity to reclaim the reo and continue the legacy that my tūpuna fought to protect.
This photograph symbolises the beginning of my journey towards healing my identity through language. The rock that the tiki sits on represents the journey I have chosen to begin at Te Pā o TIPENE, while the surrounding rocks represent the different paths, opportunities, and journeys that could have taken place. The flowing water between the rocks symbolises the past being washed away and the beginning of something new. Because the river flows continuously, it represents the ongoing nature of my journey and the daily process of learning and reconnecting with my culture.
The moss beneath the backbone of the tiki represents the revival of te reo Māori, a language that was lost within my whānau and passed down less through the generations. It symbolises new growth, healing, and the restoration of a connection to my tūpuna. The black colour of the tiki represents strength, courage, and determination. It reflects my decision to leave home and begin a new journey at Te Pā o TIPENE, working hard to achieve something that honours the struggles and efforts of my tūpuna.
Together, these elements tell a story of reconnection, resilience, and cultural renewal. Each element is interconnected, representing my commitment to honouring my whakapapa, reclaiming te reo Māori, and carrying my tūpuna’s legacy into the future while creating a new legacy of my own.
