NATALIE COUCH & MAATENE SISNETT

Natalie: Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Te Rangiita, and Te Arawa

Natalie Couch is a contemporary New Zealand artist and landscape architect whose work deeply explores the connections between people, identity, and the natural environment. Born in 1976 and of Māori (Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Te Rangiita, Te Arawa) and European descent, her multi-disciplinary practice spans drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and environmental design. She initially graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1998, later expanding her practice by earning a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours) from Unitec in 2017. This unique combination of disciplines allows her to navigate both the tangible and intangible aspects of land and lineage (whakapapa).

Her highly detailed artworks—frequently rendered in graphite on board—and her professional landscape designs both reflect an ongoing dialogue with the earth, sea, and skies. Couch’s work has gained significant national and international acclaim, featuring in exhibitions across France, Mexico, the United States, and Bulgaria, as well as being held in prestigious permanent collections like the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. She balances her fine art practice and her role as a landscape architect for Uru Whakaaro with teaching, contributing widely to the arts community as an educator and active member of the Māori print collective, Toi Whakataa.
