MARAEA TIMUTIMU

Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi

Maraea Timutimu is a multidisciplinary artist from Tauranga Moana. Growing up at TIPENE, where her father, Charlie, was a kaiako and her mother was a tumuaki, Maraea has a longstanding connection to the kura and its community. She is an art kaiako in Tauranga and a former student of Queen Victoria Māori Girls’ Boarding School.

Maraea works across a wide range of mediums, including painting, sculpture, printmaking and installation, often returning to traditional Māori art forms such as poi, tukutuku and raranga.

Maraea was introduced to natural dyes and colour pigments while studying under Tina Wirihana at Te Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. In recent times, whenua has become a medium through which she explores connection and whakapapa, bringing together pigments from Tūhoe, Ngāti Ranginui and Ngāi Te Rangi. This practice has become a way of documenting the places to which she belongs.

“There is power in connecting to your pepeha in a literal way. The painting is your maunga, your awa or your moana.”

Alongside using whenua pigments in her individual art practice, Maraea is committed to sharing this knowledge with her wider hapori.
